NYC Oyster Swim

Highlighting water Quality and efforts to make a difference

Join us on City of Water Day 2024 as we swim around Governors Island, NYC to raise awareness of water quality and the work that is being done to address it.  The swim will start in the water, in the vicinity of Castle Williams, and will proceed counterclockwise around an island that was once a military installation and is now a thriving urban retreat and future home of the New York Climate Exchange.  The swim will end at Pier 101, near the Harbor School, where we will partner with the Billion Oyster Project in sharing information about the Community Water Quality Testing Program, and BOPs efforts to improve NYC’s waterways through oyster seeding and stewardship.

Fundraising Focus

Billion Oyster Project is a New York City-based nonprofit organization with the goal of engaging one million people in the effort to restore one billion oysters to New York Harbor by 2035.

The Community Water Quality Testing (CWQT) program, managed by Billion Oyster Project, engages community scientists in weekly testing of New York Harbor water. This program – initially organized by Nancy Brous and Rob Buchanan via the New York City Water Trail Association – is the focus of our awareness building and fundraising efforts.
